Amy’s Approach to Therapy

I believe that our emotions give us valuable information about our experiences and what we need, and too often in our fast-paced, results-oriented world, our emotions are told they don’t matter, that they slow us down, or make us weak. Often people come to therapy because they feel a disconnect between what they logically think and know, versus how they feel. Maybe you look at your life and think: I should be happy and yet you’re not. Maybe you wish to move on, and are tired of certain experiences or relationships having so much power over your life. Through an emotion-focused lens, I understand that dissonance to mean there is some emotion that hasn’t been fully processed. Through therapy, we allow those feelings to be safely explored and expressed, which in turn allow them to be transformed and integrated into your experience. For me, the ultimate goal of therapy is to bring your thoughts and your emotions into alignment, so you can make choices about your life from a place of authenticity.

Therapeutic Modalities

Emotionally-focused therapy (EFT), Psychodynamic therapy, Attachment therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS), Narrative therapy

What working with Amy is like

I create a therapy space that is collaborative– meaning that both you as the client, and me as the therapist, are equally involved in deciding what therapy will look like. Every person is different, and I’m committed to tailoring our use of therapy to what would be most helpful for you. We will work together to discover your goals for therapy, explore what ‘feeling better’ means for you, and create a path to get there.

Why did you choose this profession

I’ve always loved getting to understand people, and people have always just made sense to me. Maybe not their behaviours at first, but once you got underneath that to their motivations– suddenly their actions made sense. After going through my own therapy and realizing the transformative power of therapy in changing the course of my life, I found that the intersection of my passion and finding personal meaning led me to doing the work of psychotherapy.

What do you find most meaningful about the work you do

Getting the privilege to truly see and understand people, and walk alongside people on their journey. It’s really beautiful to see someone make the changes and take the risks that lead them into creating the life that they want for themselves.
